Migrant Shelter Closings Follow Drop in Arrivals

Additional Coverage:

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the closure of 25 migrant shelters due to a decline in arrivals. The shelters will close in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Albany, Buffalo, and Poughkeepsie.

Since 2022, over 225,000 migrants have arrived in New York City, but the city has seen a 22-week drop in arrivals. This is attributed to federal executive orders limiting asylum claims and border apprehensions, as well as the city’s efforts to relocate migrants.

Adams linked the decline in numbers to the Biden administration’s executive orders and the city’s own strategies. He also expressed openness to working with the incoming Trump administration on deporting illegal immigrants with criminal convictions.

A recent poll found that 54% of New Yorkers support the state supporting efforts to deport illegal immigrants, including in New York City.
