Saydnaya Prison: A Symbol of Assad’s Cruelty
During Syria’s civil war, human rights groups estimate that tens of thousands of Syrians were held in the infamous Saydnaya prison. This prison in Damascus has been dubbed a “human slaughterhouse” by Amnesty International.
Omar Alshogre, a former Saydnaya prisoner, shared his harrowing experiences with ABC News. He described being captured at age 15 and forced to confess to false charges under torture.
Inhumane Conditions
Alshogre described the prison as a dark and terrifying place where guards used various torture methods. He spoke of crowded cells, lack of food and water, and constant beatings.
Moment of Freedom
Alshogre was one of hundreds of thousands of prisoners who were recently released from Saydnaya. He expressed immense joy at witnessing their freedom, but acknowledged the challenges that remain.

Alshogre expressed hope that a new government in Syria will bring about positive changes. He emphasized that Syrians have endured immense suffering and are determined to fight for a better future.

Alshogre criticized the lack of international support for the Syrian people. He said that Syrians have fought and sacrificed for their freedom, and deserve recognition and assistance from the global community.
