Man Sentenced for Capitol Attack Claims Congressional Invitation

A California man convicted of participating in the January 6th Capitol attack has submitted a letter to a judge, claiming he was invited to President-elect Trump’s inauguration by former Republican Congressman Chris Stewart.

Russell Taylor, who prosecutors described as a leader who organized a group to obstruct Congress’ certification of Trump’s election loss, is seeking approval to travel to Washington, D.C. for the invitation.

Stewart’s letter does not mention Taylor’s role in the Capitol attack, instead praising him as a man of integrity who has helped the less fortunate. However, prosecutors allege that Taylor led a mob that breached a police line and carried a knife and bear spray.

Despite the serious nature of his offense, Taylor received a reduced sentence of home detention and probation after cooperating with prosecutors. His lawyers now argue that he does not pose a risk and should be allowed to travel with his family under the former congressman’s invitation.
