A federal judge in New York has rejected a request from former New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez for a new trial.
Menendez was convicted in July of corruption charges, including bribery and fraud. He claimed the evidence against him was insufficient, but the judge disagreed.
The judge stated that the jury’s verdict was supported by the testimony of witnesses and the evidence presented during the trial. He found no evidence of a miscarriage of justice that would warrant a new trial.
Menendez was accused of accepting bribes in the form of cash, gold, and other favors in exchange for using his influence as a senator. He faces decades in prison when sentenced next month.
Following his conviction, Menendez resigned from office in August.
