Russian Tankers Damaged in Crimean Storm
Two Russian tankers, the Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, have sustained damage while navigating the Kerch Strait near Crimea due to severe weather conditions.
The Volgoneft 212, which was carrying oil, has reported a torn bow and is located about five miles from shore. An Emergency Ministry helicopter and rescue boat were sent to assist the vessel, which had 13 crew members on board. Tragically, one sailor has died, while the remaining 12 were evacuated safely.
The Volgoneft 239, also carrying oil, is reported to be drifting after sustaining damage. The extent of the damage to both vessels is still being assessed.
The Emergency Ministry has confirmed that oil products were present on the Volgoneft 212, and an investigation is underway to determine if there has been any spill. The Interfax news agency has reported that the Volgoneft 212 was carrying around 4,300 tons of oil.
