Feds Investigating New Jersey Drone Sightings

Additional Coverage:

Drone Sightings Prompt Government Response

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has acknowledged concerns over increased drone activity along the East Coast. The government has deployed resources, personnel, and technology to assist in addressing the issue.

Mayorkas stated that some sightings are drones, while others are misidentified manned aircraft. He cited a recent FAA rule change allowing drones to fly at night as a possible reason for the uptick in sightings.

Call for Expanded Authority

Mayorkas stressed the need for Congress to grant local and state authorities additional power to counter drone activity. He emphasized that federal authorities are limited and need expanded authority to address the situation.

Security Concerns

While the government has no knowledge of foreign involvement, Mayorkas said the US remains vigilant in investigating the drone sightings. He acknowledged previous security breaches involving drones, including the arrest of a Chinese national who flew a drone over an Air Force base.

Lack of Communication

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie criticized the government’s response, calling for more transparency and communication. He believes the lack of information has caused concern among residents.

Limited Incapacitation Ability

Mayorkas acknowledged limitations in the government’s ability to incapacitate drones. He stated that certain agencies have the authority, but the government needs expanded authority to address the issue effectively.
