49ers Suspend Campbell for Refusal to Play

Additional Coverage:

De’Vondre Campbell, a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, has been suspended without pay for the remainder of the regular season after refusing to play in last week’s game.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will bench Campbell for the final three games following his decision to sit out the end of the team’s loss to the Rams.

Campbell, who signed a one-year contract with the Niners this offseason, was demoted after Dre Greenlaw returned from injury. Sources say Campbell became unhappy and did not want to play for Shanahan anymore.

Campbell’s teammates have expressed anger over his actions, with George Kittle and Charvarius Ward calling it “selfish.” Former NFL player Shawne Merriman believes Campbell’s suspension may damage his future career prospects.

Campbell’s refusal to play has likely ended his tenure with the 49ers, whose playoff hopes are now slim.
