Amazon Workers Strike in Staten Island

Additional Coverage:

Amazon workers at a Staten Island warehouse have joined thousands of disgruntled colleagues in a nationwide strike against the retail giant.

The Teamsters union, which represents the workers, said momentum is growing as they seek fair treatment from Amazon. The strike began after Amazon ignored the union’s deadline to negotiate contracts for higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions.

The strike has spread to several sites across the country, including New York City, San Francisco, and Southern California. However, Amazon disputes the Teamsters’ claims, saying the union does not represent its employees and drivers.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel accused the Teamsters of misleading the public and said the company does not expect any impact on its operations. Teamsters spokesperson Kara Deniz countered that Amazon is “gaslighting the American public” with false narratives.

The union claims to represent nearly 9,000 Amazon workers who have organized into bargaining units to address the company’s alleged exploitation and abuse. They demand that Amazon engage in collective bargaining.
