Costco Eggs Reclassified as High-Risk for Salmonella

Hundreds of thousands of eggs sold at Costco in the southeastern US have been upgraded to a Category 1 recall, meaning they pose a “reasonable” risk of serious health problems or death due to salmonella contamination.

Initial Recall Ignored

Over 10,000 cartons of Kirkland Signature eggs were voluntarily recalled last month over salmonella concerns. However, the FDA has now designated the eggs as Category 1, indicating a higher risk.

Affected Stores and Dates

The eggs were sold at 25 Costco stores in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee from November 22, 2024.

Specific Products Involved

The recall only applies to eggs with the Julian code 327 and a Use By Date of January 5, 2025.

Health Risks of Salmonella

Salmonella is a serious foodborne illness that can cause fever, diarrhea, and nausea. It can be life-threatening for the elderly, children, and people with weakened immune systems.

Manufacturer’s Response

Handsome Brook Farms, the manufacturer, has implemented new controls and retraining to prevent a recurrence of the issue. They have not yet commented on the FDA’s categorization of the recall.
