- Georgia, Carolinas face tornado threat as deadly severe weather outbreak continues charge across Southeast (foxweather.com)
A line of storms swept through the Southeast on Sunday, bringing a renewed threat of tornadoes, damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain to areas already ravaged by Hurricane Helene.
The storm threat emerged after several tornadoes caused widespread damage in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama over the weekend, resulting in at least three fatalities.
The tornado threat in the Southeast remained high on Sunday for parts of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, but most of the storms had moved offshore by late afternoon.
Severe weather caused delays at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, with over 500 flights delayed as of Sunday morning.
Power outages surged across the South and Southeast, with nearly 190,000 customers without power.
Damage from possible tornadoes was reported near Woosley, Georgia, while cleanup efforts were underway in Athens, Alabama, after strong storms ripped through the area on Saturday.
In addition to the severe weather threat, the storm system brought heavy rainfall to western North Carolina, with some locations expecting to see their highest two-day rainfall totals since Hurricane Helene’s flooding in September.
