Treasury Department Hacked by Chinese Actor
A Chinese actor linked to the government hacked the U.S. Treasury Department in December. The breach was discovered on Dec. 8 and involved access to workstations and documents through a security key.
The compromised service has been shut down, and there is no indication that the actor still has access to Treasury systems.
Ongoing Chinese Espionage Campaign
The Treasury hack is part of an ongoing Chinese espionage campaign against the U.S. Last week, Chinese hackers targeted a telecommunications company, accessing private texts and phone calls of Americans. The number of victims is unknown.
The espionage unit known as Salt Typhoon has been active for four years, but it is unclear if it was involved in the Treasury incident.
Government Response
The government is taking steps to address the hacking campaign. Deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger said that further action is planned in the coming weeks but did not provide details.
