Massive Explosive Cache Found in Virginia Home
Federal authorities arrested a Virginia man, Brad Spafford, after seizing a vast cache of homemade explosive devices at his residence. The arrest marked the largest seizure of finished explosives in FBI history.
Explosive Devices and Rifle
During a raid on Spafford’s home, agents discovered over 150 pipe bombs, some labeled as “lethal.” Most were found in a garage, along with manufacturing materials like fuses and PVC pipes. Additional pipe bombs were found unsecured in a backpack in the bedroom.
Extremist Ideology
Prosecutors revealed that Spafford lived with two young children and kept a jar of highly unstable explosive material in his freezer. They also noted that he used images of the president for target practice and expressed support for political assassinations.
Sniper Rifle Training
Spafford sought sniper rifle training at a local range, raising concerns about his potential danger to the community. Prosecutors argued that his release would pose an extreme risk due to his access to firearms and explosives.
Investigation and Arrest
The investigation began after a source reported that Spafford had injured his hand while working with explosives. The source also alleged that he was stockpiling weapons and ammunition. Spafford reportedly claimed to produce 50 rounds of ammunition daily.
