Pearl Harbor Survivor Harry Chandler Passes Away

Harry Chandler, a Navy medic who witnessed the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, has passed away at 103. He was among the third Pearl Harbor survivor to die in recent weeks.

Witness to History

On December 7, 1941, Chandler was a hospital corpsman at Aiea Heights when Japanese planes attacked the naval base. He recalled seeing the bombs drop and the ensuing chaos.

Caring for the Wounded

Chandler assisted in the rescue of injured sailors, pulling them from the oil-covered waters. He remained focused on his duty, fearing the potential for strafing but putting his own safety aside.

Legacy and Remembrance

Chandler’s memories of the attack resurfaced during a ceremony in 2023, where he urged Americans to be prepared for potential threats. His passing leaves only 15 Pearl Harbor survivors still alive.

Service and Family

After the war, Chandler worked as a painter and owned an upholstery business. He also served in the Navy reserves, retiring as a senior chief in 1981. He is survived by two daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
