Rare Snowstorm Buries Southern Cities

Additional Coverage:

A major winter storm is hitting the United States, bringing snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.

Winter Storm Blair is expected to dump snow on areas that haven’t seen significant snow in years, including Washington, D.C. The storm is already causing travel disruptions, with over 100,000 power outages reported in Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky.

In Washington, D.C., up to 10 inches of snow is possible, coinciding with the certification of the election results and preparations for Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Governors in West Virginia and Kentucky have declared states of emergency, and officials in several cities have issued travel warnings. About half of the U.S. population is expected to experience freezing temperatures.

The storm has also disrupted air travel, with over 8,600 flights delayed or canceled on Sunday. Airlines have waived change fees for flights affected by the storm.
