A fatal avalanche occurred in Wyoming’s backcountry, claiming the life of a skier and injuring another.
The incident unfolded on Saturday near Grand Teton National Park. Four skiers were ascending a steep slope when a massive slab of snow broke away, burying one skier and partially burying another.
Rescuers on skis took hours to reach the scene due to adverse weather conditions. The partially buried skier sustained a leg injury.
The Teton County Search and Rescue expressed condolences to the deceased skier’s family. The Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center is investigating the incident.
Recent snowstorms have increased avalanche risk in the area. This marks the fifth avalanche fatality in the U.S. this winter.
