Donkey Inspiration for ‘Shrek’ Dies
Perry, the miniature donkey who served as a model for Donkey in the “Shrek” animated film, has passed away at the age of 30.
Perry suffered from a combination of health issues, including a pituitary gland disorder, nerve damage, laminitis, and muscle atrophy. The decision to euthanize him was made after his condition worsened.
Barron Park Donkey Project
Perry lived at the Barron Park Donkey Project in Palo Alto, California. The project began in the 1950s with a few donkeys and has grown to include volunteers who care for the animals.
Today, the project has three donkeys: April, Buddy, and Perry. April and Buddy have been providing support to each other since Perry’s passing.
Donkey Model for ‘Shrek’
In the late 1990s, animators from DreamWorks Animation visited Barron Park to study Perry’s movements. This helped them create a realistic character for Donkey.
The animators were drawn to Perry’s funny and feisty personality, which they incorporated into the character.
Perry’s Health
Perry’s health declined in recent months. He relied on three legs to walk and eventually became unable to walk altogether.
Despite his pain, Perry remained in good spirits and received support from his fellow donkeys. A memorial service is being planned for him in the coming months.
