US Adds Chinese Companies to Military-Linked List

The US Defense Department has expanded its list of “Chinese Military Companies” (CMCs) to include companies like Tencent, SenseTime, and CATL. These companies are now deemed to have ties to China’s military.

The US has been tightening restrictions on sharing advanced technology with China, citing national security concerns. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2024 prohibits the Defense Department from doing business with CMCs starting in 2026.

Companies Dispute Inclusion

Tencent, the world’s largest video gaming company, has denied any military connections and plans to seek a reconsideration of its designation. It believes the inclusion is a mistake and will not impact its business outside of defense procurement.

CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, also denies military involvement and claims the designation is false. It intends to engage with the Pentagon and take legal action if necessary.

AI company SenseTime similarly disputes its inclusion, stating that it has no material impact on its operations. It is committed to working with stakeholders to address the matter and protect its interests.

China Condemns Move

China has condemned the US move, calling it an “illegal unilateral sanction.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson urged the US to lift the restrictions and cease “unwarrantedly suppressing” Chinese companies.
