Alec Baldwin is suing prosecutors and investigators over his fatal 2021 “Rust” shooting case. He claims they violated his rights by withholding evidence and defaming him.
Baldwin’s lawsuit alleges that prosecutors and law enforcement were determined to convict him at all costs, even if it meant ignoring evidence that could have cleared him.
In August 2023, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin because of withheld evidence. Prosecutors initially appealed but later withdrew their appeal.
Baldwin’s civil complaint accuses the defendants of “malicious and unlawful pursuit” and seeks financial compensation and punitive damages. He believes they must be held accountable for their actions.
The case stems from an incident where Baldwin’s prop gun discharged during a rehearsal, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin has denied any wrongdoing and claims the gun was accidentally loaded with live ammunition.
Baldwin’s lawyers allege that law enforcement failed to disclose live rounds that could have been linked to the fatal bullet. The judge criticized prosecutors for their “willful withholding” of evidence, calling it “bad faith.”
Baldwin’s team has blamed others for the tragedy, including the armorer and first assistant director, while prosecutors have argued that Baldwin’s actions contributed to Hutchins’ death.
