California Governor Orders Probe into Fire Hydrant Failures

Governor Gavin Newsom has demanded an investigation into the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) following reports of fire hydrants running dry during the recent wildfires.

Troubling Discovery

Newsom expressed concern over the loss of water pressure during the fires, stating that it “likely impaired” firefighting efforts. He noted that hydrant water is not designed for large-scale wildfire suppression, but its absence still hampered home and evacuation corridor protection.

Independent Investigation

The governor has ordered an independent report to determine the causes of the lost water supply and pressure. The investigation will focus on identifying measures to ensure adequate water availability during future emergencies.

LADWP and County Review

Newsom has also requested that LADWP and Los Angeles County review their emergency response procedures to address the issue. He urged them to provide a comprehensive report on any causes of the water pressure loss.

High Water Demand

LADWP initially pumped water into the system, but high demand led to the depletion of three 1-million gallon tanks in Pacific Palisades, which provide pressure for hydrants. As a result, up to 20% of the city’s hydrants ran dry, hindering firefighting efforts.
