American Retiree Finds Dream Apartment in Malaysia
Ten years ago, Andrew Taylor, 70, left the high cost of living in the US behind to retire in Malaysia. He now enjoys a comfortable life in a two-bedroom condo in Kuala Lumpur for just $620 a month.
Taylor’s decision to retire abroad was driven by the realization that he would have to work well into his 80s if he stayed in the States. He learned about the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) visa program, which attracts foreigners to retire in Malaysia.
Creating a Dream Apartment
After spending seven years in Penang, Taylor moved to Kuala Lumpur three years ago. He found his current unfurnished apartment with a stunning view of the city skyline for $620 a month. Taylor’s apartment features a modern design with oriental touches and amenities such as a pool and gym.
Expatriate Retirement
Taylor’s experience is not unique. Many Americans are being priced out of the US and facing retirement challenges. The MM2H visa has made Malaysia an attractive destination for expats, with over 56,000 active pass holders from around the world.
Lifestyle and Safety
While Taylor’s lifestyle in Malaysia is similar to what he had in the US, the lower cost of living allows him to live comfortably. He also feels safer in Malaysia, where he has never witnessed or felt threatened by violence.
Lessons Learned
Taylor advises that retiring abroad may not be for everyone, especially those with strong family ties. However, it has proven to be a fulfilling experience for him, teaching him the value of stepping outside his comfort zone. Despite his family’s initial skepticism, he has spent a decade in Malaysia and has no plans to return to the US.
