California Utility Sued Over Eaton Fire

Additional Coverage:

Homeowners and tenants affected by the Eaton Fire in Southern California have filed multiple lawsuits against the utility company, Southern California Edison (SCE). They allege that SCE failed to de-energize its equipment despite warnings of high winds and extreme fire risk.

The lawsuits claim that SCE prioritized profits over safety and its negligence led to the fire. They allege that the company failed to properly inspect and maintain its electrical facilities, which resulted in an “electrical arcing event” that sparked the blaze.

SCE has not yet been served with the complaints but acknowledges that lawsuits have been filed. The company says it is committed to supporting the community and restoring power safely.

The lawsuits include evidence such as public statements from residents, photos, and satellite images that allegedly show the fire starting near SCE’s power lines. The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

The Eaton Fire has caused extensive damage, destroying over 7,000 structures, consuming 14,000 acres, and killing at least 16 people. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
