Georgia Voting Groups Fined for Campaign Finance Violations
Two voting advocacy groups founded by former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams have been fined $300,000 by the Georgia Ethics Commission for violating campaign finance laws. This is the largest fine imposed by the commission or any other state ethics commission related to election and campaign finance.
The groups, New Georgia Project and New Georgia Project Action Fund, failed to disclose millions of dollars in contributions and expenditures used in Abrams’ 2018 election campaign. They also failed to register as a political committee.
The commission’s investigation revealed that the groups had similar violations in 2019, failing to disclose hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions and expenditures while advocating for a ballot initiative.
Abrams, who stepped down from the groups in 2017, expressed disappointment but acceptance of the outcome. She emphasized that the groups are now focused on civic engagement and voter registration efforts.
