Dutch Couple Trades Corporate Life for Beach Resort in Thailand

Dutch couple Johan and Sabine Bogaerts left the Netherlands to open a beach resort on Koh Lanta, Thailand. They had always dreamed of running their own business instead of working for others.

Renovating the Resort

After viewing the property online, the couple leased it for 20 years. They spent about $206,000 on renovations, including new bathrooms, balconies, and paint. The resort now boasts 16 guest bungalows, a pool, a restaurant and bar, and a laundry area.

Life in Thailand

The couple employs nine full-time staff and says life is “slower and more fulfilling” in Thailand. They no longer feel the need to keep up with material possessions and enjoy spending time outdoors. However, they miss the Netherlands’ weather, especially the cold.

Work-Life Balance

The couple’s daily routine involves dropping off their son at school and tending to the resort. Despite the slower pace of life, Johan emphasizes that it’s not all play. They are still busy running the resort and have recently opened a restaurant nearby.
