Overnight Drone Strikes Between Russia and Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine engaged in significant drone attacks on Sunday night and into Monday morning. Russian authorities reported shooting down 30 Ukrainian drones over western Russian regions, including one over the Republic of Tatarstan, more than 600 miles from Ukrainian territory.

As a result, flight restrictions were imposed at three Russian airports in the Tatarstan region. The Kazan International Airport and Begishevo Airport reopened after several hours, while flights at Izhevsk Airport in the neighboring Udmurt Republic remained restricted.

Ukrainian officials claimed that “military facilities were attacked by unknown drones” in Kazan, a city housing key aviation enterprises. They also reported that 141 drones and one ballistic missile were launched into Ukraine, of which 93 attack UAVs were shot down.

Authorities in Tatarstan stated that drones targeted industrial facilities in the region, resulting in no casualties or damage. However, emergency responders were reportedly on the scene.

The Kazan Aviation Plant, sanctioned by the European Union for its role in producing military aircraft, was among the sensitive sites targeted. Governor Vladislav Shapsha of Kaluga reported that drone debris caused a fire at an industrial site, but no casualties or infrastructure damage were reported.

Meanwhile, Governor Alexander Bogomaz of Bryansk stated that air defenses shot down four U.S.-made HIMARS missiles and 14 drones over the region, with no casualties or damage.
