Arlington, VA – General Mark Milley’s official portrait was removed from its place among other former Joint Chiefs of Staff portraits at the Pentagon on Monday afternoon. The portrait’s current location is unknown.
The portrait was just unveiled last Friday at a ceremony attended by Milley and then-Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Reporters noticed the empty space on Monday, just days later.
The reason for the removal remains unclear. The White House has been contacted for comment.
Milley retired in 2023. He was appointed by former President Trump but later faced criticism from Republicans after the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
On Monday, Milley received a preemptive pardon from then-President Biden. Milley expressed gratitude for the pardon, saying he wished to avoid future battles against those seeking retribution.
Milley and Trump’s relationship deteriorated over several incidents, including Milley’s presence at St. John’s Church with Trump and a phone call Milley made to his Chinese counterpart after the January 6th Capitol riot.
Former President Trump questioned Biden’s decision to pardon Milley, along with others, during remarks on Monday. Biden defended the pardons, citing concerns about politically motivated investigations. He emphasized that the pardons didn’t imply any wrongdoing by those pardoned.
