New York Governor Wants Phones Out of Schools

Additional Coverage:

New York Governor Kathy Hochul wants to ban cellphones in schools statewide. The proposed ban would prohibit phones in classrooms, hallways, and during lunch periods.

During her budget address, Hochul argued that cellphones are a major distraction, hindering students’ ability to learn and develop essential skills. She believes a ban will create a more focused learning environment.

Hochul emphasized the mental health benefits of limiting social media access during the school day. She envisions classrooms free from the constant disruptions of technology.

The ban wouldn’t be absolute. Students with medical needs or those who are not native English speakers would still be allowed to use their phones. Individual school districts would have some leeway in implementing the policy.

The proposal needs approval from the state legislature. It’s not an executive order, but part of Hochul’s budget plan.

This follows previous discussions in New York City about a potential cellphone ban. While Chancellor David Banks was in favor, Mayor Eric Adams felt the issue needed further consideration.

Several other states have already implemented some form of cellphone restrictions in schools.
