Neighbors Slam Harry and Meghan

Additional Coverage:

Montecito residents haven’t exactly rolled out the welcome mat for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Podcast host Kinsey Schofield says locals are annoyed by the spotlight the couple has brought to their once-quiet town.

Some residents reportedly view Meghan as representing “new money” and question the couple’s financial savvy. They also see their entertainment ventures, like Meghan’s upcoming lifestyle brand and Netflix series, as desperate attempts to stay relevant. Schofield says neighbors find it hard to understand leaving royal life for such pursuits.

A recent report even labeled the Sussexes as “local villains.” Residents complain about increased housing costs and tourist traffic they attribute to the couple.

One resident referred to Meghan as “the starlet.” British broadcaster Helena Chard says the couple brings unwanted drama and attention to the area.

Despite the global interest, Schofield and Chard note that Harry and Meghan are rarely seen around town and don’t seem to be involved in the community. One source even claimed Harry lacks a social life.

Schofield suggests the couple could improve their image by focusing on their Archewell foundation’s charitable work. She believes this would show a genuine commitment to helping others rather than just capitalizing on their royal connection.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams acknowledges the couple’s initial positive press in the US is waning, citing recent critical articles. He points out that while they moved to Montecito to escape scrutiny, they continue to generate headlines.

Another royal expert, Ian Pelham Turner, offers a different perspective. He believes the couple faces constant pressure and scrutiny, living in fear of the next negative story. He argues that their perceived lack of community involvement stems from their need to protect themselves from relentless public attention.
