Warren Offers Musk 30 Ways to Cut Spending

Additional Coverage:

Senator Elizabeth Warren has offered Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a list of 30 recommendations to cut federal spending. Warren and Musk have clashed publicly in the past, but Warren expressed willingness to collaborate on this issue.

Her suggestions include reducing the Department of Defense budget, tackling fraud within Medicare, and cutting funding to for-profit schools. These recommendations align with some of Warren’s long-held positions.

Musk initially aimed for $2 trillion in cuts, later revised to $1 trillion. While Warren disagrees with some of Musk’s earlier proposals, like cuts to veterans’ benefits, she agrees that wasteful spending is a problem.

Bipartisan support is growing for collaboration with DOGE. Representative Ro Khanna and Senator Joni Ernst have both voiced support for defense spending cuts, a position Musk has also previously endorsed.

Experts suggest focusing on areas like Medicare fraud, where Musk’s tech background could be beneficial. Other suggestions include reviewing tax expenditures and reorganizing the Department of Homeland Security. Senator Ernst also recommended eliminating vacant federal buildings, auditing the IRS, and reducing SNAP benefit fraud.

Despite potential common ground on spending cuts, differences remain between Warren and Musk. Warren’s proposals to eliminate charter school funding, restrict grants to for-profit universities, and close tax loopholes for the wealthy are unlikely to garner support from Musk or some Republican lawmakers. Warren has previously criticized Musk for not paying enough in taxes.
