‘New Jack City’ Writer Dies at 66

Baltimore, MD – Writer and producer Barry Michael Cooper has passed away at the age of 66. The Maryland Chief Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his death on Tuesday.

Cooper was known for penning several iconic 90s films, including “New Jack City” starring Wesley Snipes and Chris Rock, “Above The Rim” starring Tupac Shakur, and “Sugar Hill.”

His career began in journalism, writing for publications like Spin Magazine and the Village Voice. He later transitioned to film and television, also producing the 2017-2019 TV series “She’s Gotta Have It.”

Just days ago, Cooper marked Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday on social media. His sudden passing has shocked many.
