Local News: Thousands of Troops May Deploy to Border
A leaked memo suggests the Department of Homeland Security might request up to 10,000 troops at the U.S.-Mexico border. Defense officials say they haven’t heard that number but expect further troop requests.
One official stated this is just the initial stage, with more missions anticipated.
The White House announced 1,500 troops are deploying to assist with border processing and surveillance.
The memo also indicates the potential need for military infrastructure and technology. Military bases could even be used as holding facilities for those arrested, though the Department of Defense hasn’t received such requests yet.
The Navy might assist with coastal border operations.
Reports indicate 500 Marines are deploying imminently, followed by Army units, many of whom are military police. They will not, however, perform law enforcement duties.
Four military cargo planes are being prepared for potential deportation flights. These flights are pending State Department arrangements.
U.S. Northern Command confirmed it is increasing border security. Approximately 1,500 soldiers and Marines are deploying immediately, nearly doubling the existing 2,500 personnel already supporting Customs and Border Protection.
These forces will support enhanced detection, monitoring, and barrier repairs. Troop numbers will likely fluctuate as units rotate and new deployments are finalized.
