Local News – NBC News Cuts Staff Amidst Industry Shift to Digital

NBC News has announced layoffs affecting approximately 40 employees, representing 2-3% of its workforce. The cuts come as the network restructures, focusing resources on digital growth areas.

Positions across various departments were eliminated, although some employees believe teams covering culture and diverse communities were disproportionately impacted. Network insiders maintain that no diversity news teams were dissolved and eight digital news staffers continue covering diverse communities.

While these cuts are taking place, NBC News is creating about 12 new digital-focused positions. Laid-off employees are encouraged to apply for these roles, and the network is actively hiring for over 50 other positions as well.

These changes reflect broader trends in the television news industry. Traditional TV viewership is declining as audiences increasingly turn to social media and streaming platforms for news. Other major news outlets have also made similar staff reductions this year, citing the shift away from traditional broadcasting.

NBC News also faces upcoming changes due to Comcast’s planned spin-off of several cable channels, including CNBC, later this year. This restructuring has raised internal questions about potential impacts on newsgathering, as NBC News currently utilizes CNBC reporting. Comcast intends to use the spin-off to pursue acquisitions and further growth.
