Newport, VT – A Washington state woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a US Border Patrol agent during a traffic stop. 21-year-old Teresa Youngblut is charged with assaulting a federal law enforcement officer.

The FBI affidavit reveals unusual details about Youngblut and a German national, Felix Baukholt, who was killed in the shooting. The pair had been under surveillance since January 14th after hotel staff in Lyndonville reported them as suspicious.

They were reportedly dressed in black tactical gear and Youngblut openly carried a firearm. When questioned by authorities, they claimed to be looking at property.

Five days later, they were seen in Newport, again in tactical clothing and carrying a handgun. On the day of the shooting, investigators observed Baukholt wrapping cell phones in aluminum foil at a local Walmart.

Border Patrol agents initiated a traffic stop, purportedly for an immigration violation. Gunfire erupted between 3:00 and 3:15 PM.

According to the affidavit, Youngblut allegedly fired on agents without warning, after which Baukholt reportedly attempted to draw a weapon. At least one agent returned fire, killing Baukholt.

Weapons, tactical gear, and the foil-wrapped phones were found in the vehicle. The involved Border Patrol agents have yet to be interviewed.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Craig Tremaroli praised Agent Maland’s service in the Air Force and as a Border Patrol agent, calling him “a shining example of service over self.” He vowed to bring anyone who assaults a public servant to justice.
