Pope Warns World Must Never Forget Holocaust

Pope Francis, speaking on the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, condemned antisemitism and called for a world free of discrimination. He urged education to foster fraternity, forgiveness, and peace, remembering the millions of Jews and other victims of the Holocaust.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops in 1945. This year marks 80 years since the liberation.

World leaders and Holocaust survivors will gather at Auschwitz-Birkenau to commemorate the anniversary. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum will also host a livestream event featuring three survivors sharing their stories.

Yom HaShoah, another day of remembrance, is observed on the 27th of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. This year it falls on April 24th in Israel. In the U.S., Days of Remembrance are observed the week surrounding Yom HaShoah.
