Morris Chestnut Dreams of Robert Downey Jr. on New Show

Additional Coverage:

Local actor Morris Chestnut, star of the new CBS medical drama Watson, has a dream casting pick for Sherlock Holmes. He told us exclusively that once Robert Downey Jr. is finished with the Marvel universe, he’d love to see him take on the iconic detective role on the show.

Chestnut praised previous portrayals of Holmes and said he’d be happy with any talented actor taking on the part.

Watson offers a fresh perspective on the classic Sherlock Holmes stories. Set six months after Moriarty kills Holmes, the series follows Dr. John Watson as he copes with the loss of his friend and returns to medicine, leading a clinic specializing in rare disorders.

Chestnut explained that his portrayal of Watson differs from others because this story is told from Watson’s perspective, rather than Holmes’. While part of the established Holmes mythology, the clinic and detective work represent a new element.

So far, Holmes hasn’t appeared, and Chestnut admits he doesn’t know if the character will ever be seen. The show currently focuses on Watson’s team of specialized medical professionals, including a neurologist, twin brothers specializing in infectious disease and functional medicine, a rheumatology and immunology specialist, and Watson’s ex-wife, Mary.

Chestnut emphasized the importance of Watson’s team, saying he needs them to solve cases. He hinted at challenges and unifying events that will test the team’s dynamics throughout the season.

The series premiere introduced Moriarty, played by Randall Park, setting a plan in motion against Watson. Chestnut praised Park’s performance and suggested that Moriarty will be a recurring threat throughout the season, looming large over Watson and his team.
