Weinstein Calls Jail “Hellhole,” Wants Faster Trial

Additional Coverage:

Disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein appeared in a Manhattan court Wednesday, requesting his retrial date be moved up. Looking frail and using a wheelchair, Weinstein pleaded with the judge, saying he doesn’t think he’ll survive until the scheduled April 15th start date.

Weinstein described his time on Rikers Island as a “hellhole” and said every day is a struggle. He stated he was speaking not only for himself but for others incarcerated there.

Currently battling leukemia and other health issues, Weinstein suggested April 7th as a new start date. His representative, Juda Engelmayer, expressed confidence in a swift trial and Weinstein’s eventual exoneration. Engelmayer explained that Weinstein’s comments highlighted the strain of moving between Rikers Island, court, and Bellevue Hospital.

Weinstein’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Weinstein’s serious health problems and frequent hospital visits. He insisted Weinstein’s plea was not an act.
