Drivers Use Knees to Text While Using Tesla Self-Driving Feature, Musk Says

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told investors that the company’s investments in autonomous driving and robotics could make it the world’s most valuable company.

During a recent investor call, Musk stated that Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology is so advanced that drivers are disabling it to avoid alerts for removing their hands from the steering wheel. He suggested drivers are resorting to steering with their knees to use their phones, a practice he deemed less safe than hands-free driving. This comment was in response to an analyst who found the current autopilot system “boring.”

Musk outlined plans for a cautious rollout of unsupervised FSD in Austin, Texas, starting in June. He described the approach as a gradual process to ensure safety.

This call was Musk’s first with analysts since the last presidential election. He avoided questions about his relationship with the former president, despite significant shareholder interest.

Shareholders had submitted questions online regarding Musk’s time commitment to Tesla and his political activities. These questions were not addressed during the call.

In 2024, Tesla’s revenue held steady at $98 billion, while vehicle deliveries dipped slightly to 1.8 million. Operating expenses increased by 18% due to investments in artificial intelligence and research.

Musk defended these investments, predicting they will position Tesla to manufacture cutting-edge AI and robotics products. He expressed confidence that this strategy will ultimately lead to Tesla becoming the world’s most valuable company. He dismissed past criticism of his autonomous driving predictions, claiming Tesla now has a fully developed “self-driving wolf.”
