- My daughter is entering high school without a smartphone. Instead, I got her a phone without apps or WiFi. (newsbreak.com)
As a parent and former educator, I’ve seen firsthand how screen time habits changed after the pandemic. This influenced my decision to get my high-school-bound daughter a “dumb phone.”
It’s a phone limited to calls, texts, and photos. No social media, internet browsing, or apps. She’s not thrilled, and other parents have been surprised by my choice.
I know most teens have smartphones and are constantly on social media. But I can’t ignore research highlighting the potential harm of social media for teens. The constant notifications, curated images, and sheer volume of information can contribute to anxiety, depression, and isolation.
Social media comparisons can be particularly damaging, especially for teenage girls. I don’t believe I can compete with that influence, so I’m choosing a different approach.
My daughter’s main complaint is the lack of internet access for information and games. She uses an Apple Watch to communicate with me, especially during sports, but it doesn’t allow her to connect with friends. She can still call people and will have a laptop for school.
I’ve told my daughter I’m open to changing my mind. If she finds research supporting the benefits of smartphones and social media for teens, I’ll reconsider.
I’m willing to admit I’m wrong if future studies prove me so. However, I doubt that will happen.
