Sheriff Investigated Over Immigrant Release

Additional Coverage:

The Justice Department is investigating a New York sheriff’s release of an undocumented immigrant, escalating the Trump administration’s battle against sanctuary cities.

The focus is on Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne’s release of Jesus Romero-Hernandez, a Mexican citizen. Romero-Hernandez had served time for assault.

Federal agents subsequently detained Romero-Hernandez on a re-entry violation. Ithaca, where the release occurred, declared itself a sanctuary city in 2017.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove praised the investigation, asserting the Sheriff’s office disregarded a warrant and endangered federal officers.

However, Tompkins County officials deny these claims. They state that ICE was notified of the release and could have taken Romero-Hernandez into custody at the jail.

They insist they did not interfere with federal authorities and call the DOJ’s accusations false.

Bove recently instructed US Attorneys to prioritize immigration enforcement, comparing undocumented immigrants to terrorists. This marks a major shift in Justice Department priorities.
