Northeast Philadelphia residents are shaken after a small private plane crashed on Friday, leaving multiple victims. The crash occurred just two days after a devastating mid-air collision in Washington, D.C. claimed 67 lives.
The private jet, a Learjet 55, went down near Roosevelt Mall around 6:30 p.m. shortly after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. It was headed to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. Two people were on board.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with assistance from the FAA.
Roads near the crash site, including sections of Roosevelt Boulevard near Cottman and Bustelton Avenues, were closed. Local authorities urged people to avoid the area.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed the crash and pledged state resources to assist with the response and subsequent fire. He offered condolences and support via social media.
