Pasadena, Texas – A shooting at Pasadena Memorial High School during a band competition Saturday evening left one person injured. A man in his 80s opened fire with a small-caliber weapon inside the school, which was hosting students from multiple districts.

The injured individual, a percussion technical consultant for the Angleton Independent School District band, was struck in the shoulder. He was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

The suspect, who was not involved with the competition, was quickly tackled by a parent after firing the weapon. Pasadena ISD police and several bystanders then helped disarm and detain the man. Police Chief Jerry Wright commended the quick actions of those involved, saying they prevented further injuries.

Several parents who were assisting with the competition, known as the Pearland Band Dads, played a key role in subduing the suspect. These dads, including military veterans and a police sergeant, sprang into action after hearing shouts of “active shooter.” They disarmed the suspect, restrained him with a makeshift belt-handcuff, and held him until police arrived.

The suspect, identified as 83-year-old Dennis Erwin Brandl, Jr., reportedly told police he believed he was being pursued and feared for his and his wife’s safety. He had left his home and ended up at the school. Witnesses confirmed that Brandl repeated these claims while being restrained.
