Missing Hiker Found Dead in the Smokies

A 73-year-old hiker was found dead in Great Smoky Mountains National Park over the weekend. Ann Houghton, from Jackson County, North Carolina, was reported missing on Saturday after she failed to return from a planned hike.

Houghton’s vehicle was located at the Smokemont Campground, prompting a search along several trails including Bradley Fork, Chasteen Creek, Hughes Ridge and Enloe Creek. Multiple agencies assisted park rangers in the search.

On Sunday, Houghton’s body was discovered about a quarter mile off the Enloe Creek Trail. The cause of death has not yet been released.

Houghton was a dedicated volunteer at the park for over two decades and was nominated for a volunteer service award in 2022. Park officials described her as an avid hiker and beloved member of the Smokies community. Acting Superintendent Charles Sellars expressed condolences to her family and friends.
