Egg Thief Cracks 100,000 Eggs, $40,000 Gone

Additional Coverage:

Greencastle, PA – A staggering 100,000 eggs were stolen from a distribution trailer at Pete & Gerry’s Organics over the weekend. The theft, which occurred Saturday evening, represents an estimated loss of $40,000.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the incident and have asked anyone with information to contact their Chambersburg bureau. Details about the theft are scarce, with police declining to release further information at this time. Pete & Gerry’s Organics acknowledged the theft and stated their commitment to a swift resolution but offered no further comment.

This grand larceny comes as egg prices continue to soar nationwide. The USDA predicts a 20% increase in egg prices this year, far outpacing the projected 2.2% increase for overall food costs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that egg prices have already doubled since last August, reaching an average of $4.10 per dozen by the end of 2024.

The primary driver of these rising costs is a supply shortage caused by outbreaks of avian flu. This highly contagious virus has impacted poultry farms across the country, further tightening egg supplies.

Experts suggest consumer behavior is also playing a role. Fears of future shortages and even higher prices are driving some to stockpile eggs, mirroring the panic-buying seen with toilet paper at the start of the pandemic. This increased demand exacerbates the existing supply issues, contributing to the escalating prices.
