Hollywood Star Returns After Ageism Exile

Additional Coverage:

Veteran actress Joan Chen, known for films like “The Last Emperor” and the television series “Twin Peaks,” is experiencing a career revival. She recently appeared at the Sundance Film Festival for the premiere of “The Wedding Banquet.”

Chen, once a rising star in Hollywood, saw her opportunities dwindle with age. She described herself as having been viewed as an “exotic flower” in the industry, a status that faded over time.

After her early success in the US, Chen returned to China, where she had initially begun her acting career. Her ability to work in both English and Chinese allowed her to continue acting steadily. She noted that for many years, she avoided Los Angeles, choosing to work in other locations.

Recently, Chen has seen a resurgence in Hollywood. Following roles in a recent FX series and the indie comedy “Dìdi,” she’s now receiving acclaim for her performance in “The Wedding Banquet,” a remake of the 1993 romantic comedy.

While unsure of the reason behind this renewed interest, Chen expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work in the US again. “The Wedding Banquet” is slated for theatrical release.
