Foods to Skip for Healthier Weight

Additional Coverage:

Local neuroscientist Robert Love and weight loss expert Dr. Dean Jones recently teamed up to identify three foods that commonly contribute to weight gain. They warn that some seemingly harmless choices can actually sabotage your health goals.

Fried foods top the list. Think French fries, chicken tenders, and onion rings.

The problem isn’t just the high calorie count. Dr.

Jones points out that most fried foods are cooked in low-quality, processed oils that are high in inflammatory trans fats. These fats not only hinder weight loss but also pose risks to overall health and brain function.

Love adds that inflammation is a key risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.

Next up is soda. The high sugar content, primarily from high fructose corn syrup, offers empty calories with no feeling of fullness.

Dr. Jones explains that these sugary drinks lack fiber and satiety, leading the body to store the excess calories as fat.

He also warns of potential negative impacts on cognitive health.

The final culprit might surprise you: fruit juice. While often perceived as healthy, most commercially available juices are loaded with sugar from fruits like apples and oranges.

Dr. Jones clarifies that healthy juicing is possible, but most people add too much sugar for taste.

He recommends consuming whole fruits instead, as the fiber helps regulate blood sugar and promotes satiety. He even suggests “reverse juicing,” consuming the pulp and discarding the juice.
