DeLeon Springs, Florida — A dramatic rescue unfolded on Lake Dias Tuesday when a man was found unresponsive in a boat spinning uncontrollably in circles. Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies and fire rescue personnel sprang into action after receiving the call.
The rescue team quickly formulated a plan to save the man. A marine unit carefully approached the spinning vessel, allowing Acting Division Chief John Kyp to leap aboard. Kyp, also a Technical Rescue Deputy Team Leader, managed to stop the boat and bring the unconscious man to shore.
Officials say the man is expected to recover fully. Dramatic video footage of the rescue shows the out-of-control boat circling on the lake before the marine unit arrives and attempts to nudge it ashore.
After the initial attempts failed, Kyp jumped onto the runaway boat, cut the engine, and secured the passenger. The man was then transferred to the police boat and transported for medical treatment.
