A new Netflix documentary series, “American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson,” revisits the infamous 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Director Floyd Russ believes the story resonates even more today, almost 30 years later.
The series debuted shortly after the death of O.J. Simpson, the former NFL star acquitted of the murders. Simpson died of cancer last April at age 76.
Russ highlighted the lasting impact of the case, drawing parallels to contemporary movements like MeToo and Black Lives Matter. He described the O.J.
Simpson saga as the “most epic, iconic, crazy, disastrous, true crime story ever.” He emphasized themes of domestic violence, race, and the battle over controlling the narrative, all of which remain relevant.
The documentary was nearly complete when Simpson died. Russ noted Simpson’s insistence on social media that he was healthy, despite his illness.
The four-part series features interviews with key figures from the trial, including lawyers from both sides, detectives, a juror, Ron Goldman’s sister, and Simpson’s former agent.
Russ revealed that Kris Jenner, a close friend of Nicole Brown Simpson, declined to participate. He expressed disappointment, believing Jenner had a unique perspective to offer.
