Local Family Embarks on Year-Long Adventure in Spain

A local family is getting ready to trade upstate New York for the vibrant streets of Madrid. Bethany Stevens, her husband, and their two children, ages 8 and 10, will embark on a year-long adventure in Spain starting July 3rd.

This “gap year” has been five years in the making, sparked by a less-than-magical trip to Disney World. A subsequent, albeit chaotic, trip to Paris ignited their passion for international travel.

Madrid was chosen for its culture and central location in Europe, although the family had never visited before selecting it. A scouting trip last December solidified their decision.

Mr. Stevens, CEO of an investment advisory firm, gave his company ample notice of his sabbatical. This allowed for a smooth transition and gave the family time to save and prepare.

The family plans to maintain their current home, with a relative living there in their absence. They will continue to pay their mortgage, while the relative covers utilities and other expenses.

Caring for their numerous pets, including three dogs, a cat, reptiles, guinea pigs, and chickens, presents a significant challenge. Family and friends have stepped up to help care for the menagerie. The family is still considering bringing their smallest dog along.

While eager to explore Europe, the Stevens family also wants to immerse themselves in Madrid life. The children will attend a British school with a predominantly Spanish student body. Learning Spanish will be a priority, with language tutoring already underway.

Packing light is key. Each child will have a backpack for their belongings. The family embraces a minimalist approach, allowing for more quality time.

The Stevens family has a flexible budget, prioritizing experiences over strict cost-cutting. They anticipate spending between $3,000 and $5,000 monthly on an apartment, $2,600 for health insurance, and private school tuition. They’ve also invested in professional consultations for immigration and tax advice.

Some details, such as securing an apartment, can’t be finalized until closer to their departure. Ms.

Stevens maintains a checklist and is tackling tasks as they become feasible. She’s booked doctor and vet appointments just before their departure date.

With meticulous planning and a sense of adventure, the Stevens family eagerly awaits their arrival in Madrid.
