Lead Foot States: Where Speeding Tickets are Most Common

Speeding is a dangerous and costly habit. The National Safety Council reports speeding is a factor in 29% of all traffic deaths.

Law enforcement agencies across the country try to curb this dangerous behavior with speeding tickets. Some states, however, issue significantly more tickets than others.

A recent study analyzed car insurance applications and identified the states with the highest percentage of drivers with speeding tickets. North Dakota topped the list, with 8.7% of drivers having a speeding violation on their record. Low fines and wide-open roads may contribute to this high number.

Wisconsin and Ohio tied for second place, with 7.8% of drivers having speeding tickets. Wisconsin saw over a thousand tickets issued in 2022 for drivers exceeding 100 mph. Ohio utilizes traffic cameras, which may contribute to the high number of violations.

Iowa and Idaho both had 7.1% of drivers with speeding tickets. While Idaho has high speed limits, Iowa’s are much lower. Wyoming, South Dakota, Virginia, Utah, and Oregon rounded out the top ten.

Speeding tickets not only lead to fines but also increased insurance premiums. The average monthly insurance cost jumps from $199 to $276 for drivers with a speeding violation. Drivers in these states should be particularly cautious and mindful of their speed.

Beyond avoiding speeding tickets, drivers can improve their finances by focusing on debt reduction, increasing their income, and cutting expenses. Shopping around for car insurance is one way to potentially lower costs.
