Local Maryland woman Christine Cole found love at 30,000 feet. Ten years ago, a chance encounter on a flight from Idaho to Washington, D.C. led to a whirlwind romance and marriage.
Cole, now 50, vividly recalls the flight after Christmas 2014. A fellow passenger, Jesse, accidentally bumped her while stowing his bag.
His profuse apologies sparked a conversation that lasted the entire flight. Cole was immediately struck by his warm smile.
Jesse openly shared about his life, including a recent divorce. Cole felt a connection, sensing he was a good person.
Before parting ways, she gave him her business card, thinking he could use a friend. Jesse walked her to her connecting gate, a gesture that felt surprisingly comfortable.
A few days later, Jesse emailed, expressing his gratitude for their conversation. He wanted to continue their connection but was mindful of her life. Cole, however, was ready for her life to change.
Their first phone call lasted 11 hours. They decided to focus on building a friendship, communicating through emails and texts until his divorce was finalized.
Once it was, Jesse asked to video chat. He proposed to Cole from his favorite spot on the Idaho Falls River.
She said yes.
Weeks later, Jesse visited Cole in Maryland, meeting her friends and family. By the end of the trip, they were engaged.
The proposal was unique; they proposed to each other, exchanging rings. This symbolized the equality they both valued in their relationship.
Shortly after, Jesse lost his job. Cole invited him to stay with her while he looked for new opportunities.
During his visit, Cole was hospitalized with pneumonia. Jesse became her caretaker, solidifying their bond.
They found an apartment in Calvert County, and nine months after their initial meeting, they were married.
Ten years later, their love story continues. A recent trip brought them back to the Denver airport where they first met, prompting fond memories. Cole acknowledges that marriage takes work but believes it shouldn’t feel like a chore when it’s with the right person.
