- We let our kids choose between Disneyland and Palm Springs. We’re shocked they chose the latter, but we all loved the trip. (businessinsider.com)
A family from Australia recently vacationed in California, and to their surprise, Palm Springs outshone Disneyland in the eyes of their teenage children. Initially planning to visit a theme park after exploring Los Angeles, the parents gave their teens the choice of Disneyland or Palm Springs. Much to their astonishment, the teens unanimously chose the desert oasis.
The family quickly fell in love with Palm Springs’ unique charm. The mid-century architecture and relaxed atmosphere provided a welcome contrast to the bustling city of Los Angeles. The teens enjoyed spotting statues of famous figures along Palm Canyon Drive, learning about local icons like Lucille Ball and Sonny Bono.
Date shakes became a daily ritual. The family sampled various flavors at a local shop, finding the rich, caramel-like sweetness of the dates irresistible. Even the family member who typically avoids dates was won over.
A trip on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway proved a highlight. The rotating tram car transported the family to Mount San Jacinto State Park, where breathtaking panoramic views awaited. The teens surprised their parents by enthusiastically leading hikes along the mountain trails, captivated by the scenery and the fragrant Jeffrey pine trees.
A day trip to Joshua Tree National Park offered a different kind of desert adventure. The family hiked among the unique Joshua trees and climbed rock formations.
The lack of cell service encouraged genuine conversation, a rare treat with teenagers. A spontaneous photo shoot among the rocks, with the teens striking dramatic poses, became a fun, memorable moment.
Back at their hotel, even with cooler December temperatures, the family enjoyed the amenities. Pickleball matches became a nightly tradition, and the heated pools offered evening relaxation. The teens, usually quick to retreat to their rooms, stayed up late with their parents, planning the next day’s activities.
The family’s two days in Palm Springs only scratched the surface of what the area has to offer. As they departed, the teens were already making plans for a return trip, eager to explore more hiking trails, try rock climbing in Joshua Tree, and indulge in more date shakes. The family agreed that while the choice of Palm Springs over Disneyland was unexpected, it turned out to be a perfect vacation.
